300 SAUM
« on: August 06, 2013, 12:50:10 PM »
Looking at a used Remington 700 in 300 SAUM.  Im not too familiar with this caliber.  Any thoughts?  Anybody run this caliber?

I have one in the Rem Mod 673 Guide Rifle.  Hard hitting caliber!  Shoots lights out too, even w/factory loads.  But, you'd be better off reloading this one as manufactured ammo is hard to come by and is very expensive.

Little bit shorter than 300WSM, this was so it would fit the remington model 7 and similar short actions so remington could use existing actions without having to do modifications.  Sounds like it is 100-150 feet per second faster than the 30-06.  If you get one, you are probably going to want to reload for it.  Factory ammo might get pretty hard to find.  I kicked around the idea of picking one up (fair deal), but in the end it doens't give me enough over my 30-06's to get excited about.

Rumor has it, it is inherently more accurate than the 300WSM (this was per benchrest shooters comparing the two in multiple rifles).  If none of the downsides listed turn you away then go for it.  I'm sure someone will chime in with first hand expirience, as I know a few member use them.

It comes with dies and brass, and also 10 handloads.   I don't reload myself but have access to equipment if needed.

With access to reloading equipment, and because it comes with brass and dies, I really can't see how you could go wrong, as long as it isn't shot out or anything.  I wouldn't hesitate if it is what you are looking for.

Go for it!

I doubt that you'd ever notice the difference between the WSM and the SAUM.

I have owned two .300 SAUM in the Remington Model 7 not the 700. For the life of me I couldn't get either to shoot. I wouldn't mind trying the chambering in a standard Model 700 or a custom chamber job. Word has it there were issues with some of the first Model 7's chambered in the .300 SAUM. I tried the two model 7's back when the cartridge first hit the market. I am very fond of the .300 WSM chambering on the M700.

Even if you are reloading, brass is spendy and harder to find as well. Too bad Rem all but abandoned the saums. Cabelas had some last time I stopped in but it runs near $50/box and very limited in selection. One.

Great cal otherwise and the saum comes in the 22" bbl unlike the wsm.
