Securing gamecams???
« on: October 22, 2008, 05:55:42 PM »
I'm just curious???  These cams that have been stolen, have they been secured to the tree in any way, to prevent someone from just walking up and taking it?

I've read all these post about the gamecams getting stolen, and it makes me wonder if any of you guys are locking them up?

I have a Bushnell trailscout that I have setup a couple of times, and although I haven't got many pictures, I haven't had it stolen yet, either.  Not sure if it's just because of where I'm putting it, or whether it's becuase of the padlock on the cam and the cable around the tree?

Are these cams that are getting taken secured to the tree in any way?  Just curious.  I bought my padlock and cable the sametime I bought the camera.  I couldn't phanthom leaving a couple hundred dollar piece of equipment out in the woods without some way of securing it, so some a-hole doesn't just walk off with it.

I've been looking at getting a better camera, something like a Moultrie, but then I saw how flimsy their padlock hole was and mounting brackets, (the one at Sportsmans Warehouse actually had a broke mounting strap bracket), I decided against it.

So, I'll stick with my Bushnell, and keep lockiing it to the trees...

I don't understand why some of them don't come with a way to lock it to a tree....My stealth cam is always cabled to the tree and a padlock locking the cam closed. I wouldn't put it out there any other way.

It is really too bad that we have to lock the cams up.  I bet if we sat and caught a few of the SOBs stealing them they would change their tune.

I use Master Python cable lock on the two homebrew cams I have, and I made a 1/4" cable lock for my other cam.  You'd pretty much need bolt cutters or cut the tree down to get them without damaging them.  I also do to great lengths to hide them with moss, etc.  Here's a photo of a typical setup.  You can see a section of cable exposed where a piece of moss fell off.  I try to choose a more brushy location so I consider this set-up pretty visible.  But then again, I try to hunt secluded out-of-the-way areas.
