Alliant Black MZ in a sidelock
« on: August 11, 2013, 05:33:18 PM »
Well today I wanted to see how well Black MZ worked in my CVA Hawken .58cal 1:66 twist muzzy. I built her for big game and so that means heavy loads of Goex or Olde Eynsford, but with the Black MZ on hand, why not?

Using 100 grains volume Black MZ, .562" round ball .020" patch lubed with moose milk and rung out " Wet patches kill accuracy" I set up a target at 75 yards and got down to it.
I did swab between shots for this group.

Not to happy with that group, I went and decided to NOT swab the bore and see how that did, along with a few minutes between shots, I also UPPED my charge to 110 grains Black MZ.

Now we are talkin!! A weird straight up and down group, but hey, shes groupin a lot more consistent.

Once again, I let the gun cool down and went back later in the evening with a new target a little easier to see with my thick front sight and shot my first 2 shots, Aprox 1 1/4" apart, one click down on my sight and I was printing the same darn group! Its ready for 100 yards tomorrow.

110 grain patches I recovered.

Earlier I tried the dry patch method and 2 out of 5 shots hit the target. After recovering the patches, I now know why LOL.

i use the moose milk when shooting a black powder events too helps cut down on the flowing   .   Have you tried using the ox york patches when working up you hunting loads /   lots of the folks i shoot with use them only when hunting . have a few friends that us them no matter when they shoot  the MZL  as i said i use them only for hunting an shooting round ball    its just a thought  and you might see a difference in the grouping
