calling bulls and hunter orange
« on: August 19, 2013, 10:29:41 PM »
Been practicing my elk calls and watching elknuts videos and man am I getting pumped about our peaches muzzy hunt. From my scouting it looks like we may have to call them in real close to get a shot. I am concerned our hunter orange vests could really screw up a close encounter. Anybody have any input on how to deal with this? How big of a problem will it be?

I don't think it would be a problem, since elk don't see color. Maybe get the camo orange vest so it doesn't look like just one solid blob. If you're not moving they shouldn't see you, anymore than they would if you were wearing camo.

Truth is I think most people wear camo more to impress other hunters than to be invisible to elk.   :chuckle:

Is orange required for your hunt?  The area would have to be open for modern firearm elk/deer hunting during your hunt for orange to be required.

We always hunt muzzy, and usually wear orange hats voluntarily.  Elk don't seem to notice, or care.

Oh, and we'll see you up there.   8)

There are 10 riffle permits issued for the same hunt and allthough it is not a general season hunt, the regs seem to indicate that orange is required.

I believe that elk do see the luminescent or reflective quality of hunter orange especially in low light times of early morning or late evening when the color just pops.

Didn't know we had any modern firearm big game hunts of any kind in this state where hunter orange is not required. You sure?

If you have a modern permit for elk, you must wear orange.

Better be checking again I think the language reads:

Any open modern forearm deer or elk season....   :dunno:

Labs07 and I dealt with this last year!!! Muzzy guys do not have to wear orange!! Modern permits do. However if a general modern rifle season is open you must wear orange...

Peaches muzzy hunts do not require hunter orange..
I kill elk and eat elk, when I'm not, I'm thinking about killing elk and eating elk.

It doesn't matter what you think...

As  a rifle tag I'm same as muzzy. Look at your regs . The permit that you drew . If it has and H buy it then orange is required . If not know  orange  is required . The quality rifle is not general season . :twocents:

Disagree.
See my avatar pic? I'm wearing orange. I had the only permit in the whole unit. They gave out 1 and I had it. No other hunters. Modern firearm. I still had to wear orange.
