Naneum, post fire

Just got back from a day scouting trip up to the Naneum. Got up in the Table Mountain area and some of the canyon region below. Man, it is still a wasteland up there. Small pockets of green and random timber stands but a huge chunk is just dust, ash and char. Lots of mushroom pickers though. Saw a couple cows and a calf but no bulls yet. Has anyone else seen anything up there?

I have been wanting to go and check out the devastation this year but have had NO free time. What way did you get up there i usually go in from the Ellensburg side to lion rock area.

We went up Table Mtn Road from the Reecer Creek side. We made it up to Lion Rock and as you look out over Table Mountain, the whole plateau just looks like a charred waste. There is very little green up there but like I said, there are these random little green patches sprinkled throughout. Tons of mushroom pickers up there. Just SE of Lion Rock on the downhill slopes there are places the fire passed over but didn't totally burn out. The North side of the ridge near Trail 315 that runs east and west looks for the most part, untouched. We did however, run into the annoying Motorbikers and random yelling hikers. We turned around just past the Nealy Creek head. I have not yet gone and checked out the Coleman Creek side and have no idea if the fire made it over that far. There is definitely not as much new undergrowth as I would expect from the year after a large burn.

In the years to follow, there will be so much greenery.

I wish they'd let some of the big fires go for a few years.

I know that's a controversial statement but it's what a lot of areas need

Talked to game department Monday. He said all roads are open and fire didn't make it to colockum pass road even. Also talked to dnr she said an rum ridge road from 4 corners to colockum pass road may be closed time to time for habitat rebuilding. Can't wait to get up there and try to get a spike on the ground. Have the first week off to try and get it done.

DNR?? What do they know of "habitat "re"building"?? I've seen their handywork in that area and in no way could it be misconstrued as rebuilding. Quite the contrary!
