Basic Knowledge help
« on: August 28, 2013, 11:00:03 AM »
So I didn't grow up in a very outdoorsy family. I could probably count the number of times I went fishing on 1 hand with fingers left over. My wife LOVES to fish and I have recently gotten into it. My 5 year old actually has allot of patience. So off I went, Beginner poles (Rod and Reel combo and the good ol Zebco for my son and wife) and some VERY basic tackle. Picked up a 12  foot Aluminum row boat off of here and have been putting it in a couple of lakes out here by Gig Harbor. Yesterday was out on horseshoe lake and picked up some REALLY small trout and crappie (Kid was uber excited to bring in 2 fish).

I want to start expand, but have NO idea the types of lures/bait I should be using or even where to go. Was thinking about heading out to Deveraeux Lake in Kitsap for another try. I have been using a smaller spinner and nightcrawlers on hook with a bobber.

Just looking for a little advice of maybe what type of fish I should be going for to keep my kiddo interested while I learn how to do this better. Maybe some advice how to pull in a trout that is bigger than about 5 inches (LOL)

Thanks!

Could look into Lake Cushman out by Hoodsport.  The trout are a little bigger and there are also kokanee.

Or take that trout pole out to Salsbury Pt park near the hood canal bridge, buy a salmon punchcard and some barbless salmon hooks at Walmarche' and a couple packs of herring and stand there and cast for silver/coho salmon
its a hoot
go early am
have fun

If you're trolling,I'd buy a few Triple Teazers and Dick Nites.  I'd get one that's red/white,one that's frog (green with yellow dots) and one that's brass/chrome.

Some small flatfish (F4-F5 size) Frog pattern, chrome or gold.

Wedding ring spinners tipped with a worm work well also.

If you want to plunk some bait, get a couple colors of power bait. Run a leader 18-24" long with a slip sinker rig.

The problem with this time of the year is that most of the lakes around here are planted with fish in the fall or right before the season opens in spring. They're usually getting pretty fished out by now.
