New Washington Hunter from Wisconsin
« on: September 04, 2013, 07:51:17 PM »
Hi All,

I recently moved to Washington from Wisconsin, and am itching to get out this year and do some Elk hunting. I have never hunted Elk before ( there are none in Wisconsin) But am an avid Whitetail hunter as well as waterfowl, and some small game.

I am wondering on some tips on Elk hunting, I live in Yakima, and am planning on going into the Ahtanum State Forest Area. So GMU 368 and maybe as far in as 364. Is there a lot of people in this area? and how is the Elk hunting ( i aplogize if this sounds funny to those who know the area, but its all new to me)

Also, are there a lot of Bear and Cougar as well?

Any tips, advice or pointers would be much appreciated.

Thank You!

From Southern Wisconsin, but have done most of my hunting along Western Wisconsin near the Mississippi, and Centeral Wisconsin.

Right now just Modern Firearm, to get my feet wet, I'd like to Muzzleload in the future. Don't have a Bull permit, so just spike only for me.
Iv'e been out scouting a few times already, just sort of figuring out the area.

for harvest numbers for each species in each unit you can got to the Washington Department of Fish and wildlife, on the hunting page look for "game management", click that, then look for "harvest reports".. it will give you at least an idea of harvest numbers for each unit for the last several years.. should get you some info about game numbers anyway.

Wisco I moved out here from central WI 2 yrs ago so welcome. Yeah there's a fair amount of bear and cats around just about everywhere in WA since they don't allow dog hunting anymore. I live westside but if you wanted to meet up sometime and go after some coyotes or something we could get together up by Ellensburg later this year. Shoot me a PM sometime if that works. Kyle
