Blacktail 2x2 with bow
« on: September 05, 2013, 09:33:37 AM »
Went out for the opener of elk with a multi deer tag in the pocket. Told my self i was going to hold out for a buck with the bow with the amount of time given. Went to a spot over 4 miles in on foot watching an old cut that i have seen deer and elk before. Sat until 8:30 or so when i notice this guy feeding on the  tree line in the bottom of a cut and he soon bedded down. The stock was on and down the cut I went. Had to sneak through a bunch of thick brush without being detected. Made it onto a stump 30 yards away and could see his antler tips. The weather definitely helped making the stock. Stood on the stump 2 hours waiting for him to get up from his bed. When he did he never new what hit him. 30 yard shot and about a 75 yard recovery. I got my first buck with a bow. Hanging weight was right at 81 pounds with just quarters, rib meat and neck scraps, backstrap and tenderloin. Not bad for a small com-packed antler. Guessing it would have been around 100 with ribcage. With the long hull out we quartered it up and hulled it out over 4 miles. Was tired but proud by the end of it.

Nice job. Sounds like you had a great hunt. Spot and stalk is my favorite way to hunt. Any Blacktail with a bow is fantastic. He's good size too.

Nice, last year I passed on a couple similar size bucks during early archery with a MS tag in my pocket. Due to work and truck issues I was really limited on hunting the rest of the season, really regretted passing on those bucks while I dined on my MS tag all winter. :bash:

Decided to do a tanned hide and a plaque for the antlers. So bought a cheap plaque kit and threw them in.

Peters taxidermy in graham. They do an awesome job on all the work I bring them. I have a deer and elk hide getting tanned right now.
