Marlin 336-S.C. Need your opinions!
« on: October 27, 2008, 06:57:27 AM »
Hey guys,
I Semi Inherited a really sweet 30-30. it was in bad shape. been sitting in a box in the damp for loong time. so i cleaned and scrubbed it and now it feels good cycles well and seems ready. it had a really bad "Texan" scope on it.. Yarded that off and shot it open sighted at the range and was noowhere near on it. It has the standard rear sight with an adjustable front...

rather than fiddle with those i reckon i would ask you guys about different sights or optic for this 30-30 i don't really want to put another scope...

What do you guys have on your 30-30's?

I dont have a 30-30 but if I did I'd put a good peep sight on it or if a scope was desired i'd put a weaver 1x3. JB

I have a Marlin 336 in 30/30.  I use the stock sights and it shoots sub 4” groups @ 200 yards with the right ammo.

If your Marlin receiver has the standard drill and tap you should be able to just bolt the peep on.  I’ve been looking at this one but haven’t bought it yet:

http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpage.exe/showproduct?saleitemid=583902&t=11082005

Mine is a newer rifle, I don’t know if the older ones came pre-drilled.

For ammo I load my own.  The most accurate is a Sierra Pro-Hunter 125 gr hollow point flat nose.  I load that with Ramshot TAC at the max recommended load.  Seems the faster I push it, the more accurate it gets.

I as well don't have a lever rifle, but have been hankering for one of the Marlin Guide Guns in a 450 Alaskan or the 45/70.  When I do get that gun, it will be wearing a peep sight until my eyesight gets to the point that I need a scope.
I didn't say it was your fault, I said I was blaming you.
If I ageed with you, then we'd both be wrong.

I have a Marlin 336 in 30-30 with the stock sights.  While shooting with some buddies, they dared me to hit a pop can at 100 yds and to my surprise I did, twice.  granted I was using my arcery target as a rest, but it gave the confidence that I could down a deer at that distance or closer.  I plan to keep the sights on there for use in the thick stuff.

Where are you located? If near Lacey, I have the gunsmith for you.

Marlin 336 here with the standard buckhorn iron sights. Been planning on upgrading to these pretty soon: http://www.skinnersights.com/

Best group so far is 2" @ 100 yards off the bench. I'm not the best shooter so the rifle will probably group better still.

One Ragged Hole rear sight (www.oneraggedhole.com).  Ghost ring aperture.

Needed to put a higher front sight on it.  Easily done with a replacement Williams front sight from Brownells.

I own a 336 in .35 Remington. The most accurate non rotary lever action gun I've ever seen or heard of.

If I were 35 yrs younger both marlins would have ghost rings on them.  My guide gun w/45/70 has a cheap simmons red dot-works for me-specially in the shadows.  Got one bear w/it so far.

Want some really cool, qualified levergun info?  Go to the Marlin forum-very practical.
