sasquatch has been known to huff and puff like that during its rut.

obviously manbearpig  :chuckle:  the pigs around here do that.

you will hear sounds you might not have ever heard

Ain't that the truth!

The point of this whole post was because it was a sound I hadn't heard before. :chuckle:  But you guys are probably right about it being a deer.  Why would a bear come in that close down wind from me and then huff at me unless it moved into my wind from the side which I guess could be possible.  I have spent a lot of time in the woods in my life and this time It just felt different than anything else I have experienced.  You ever just get a bad feeling about a situation?  Maybe its all in my head :P
yeah then I said I do

I guess it is just really hard to describe a sound in text.  I have heard PLENTY of deer making the "wheezy blows" like in the video.  This was not anything like that.  It was NOT like someone blowing their nose into a hanky, it was just straight air through the nose.  Not like a sneeze or cough but more like a sigh or a harrumph but through the nose.  Like you might do if you scoffed at someone who said something really stupid or a kid trying to shoot a pea out his nose only by something bigger.  I'm not saying it wasn't a deer, I'm just saying it didn't sound like a typical "deer in distress warning" sound.  And there was no other sound of the animal moving through heavy brush, no stomping, bounding or running.  Whatever it was sneaked in and out.

I've had deer blow at me while calling. the 1st time it happened I KNEW it was a bear, till I saw the doe doing it. Hard to say what you called in but my vote goes for deer.

It was a fat tree hugger coming to save the poor distressed animal, but was out of breath.

Sounds like a doe to me, and they do really respond well to those calls.  Doe and Flickers(the bird)

I've had a similar experience.  My son & I along with the neighbor kid had gone out coyote calling in a large clearcut near Skamakowa.  After a few minutes of calling we heard a massive amount of crashing and loud noises in the underbrush coming right at us at mach 10 speed.  I could see nothing in sight... looking around expecting to see a large herd of elk charging, still nothing.  At the same time as this unknown charger approached I could hear large huffing and puffing noises.  I'm thinking holy @#$%!!!   At the last second just before this thing is on top of us it shifts hard right and runs into the open clear cut.  It was a black bear about a year old.  It had responded to the call and must have either got scent of us or saw us just before it plowed us over.  Thank God it turned and went the other way.  It screamed bloody murder all the way through the clear cut, snorting and making huffing and puffing noises as it ran. I had never heard that sound before.  To this day, my son who is only 12 is very reluctant to go into the woods.  This experience scared him very bad!  Slowly but surely I am trying to coax him back out and build up his confidence.

The first time I heard a noise like that in WA was when I was hunting with my dad.  I thought it may have been a deer until I found out that my dad had shot a bear and it went right to me.  It sounded really close to a deer, but I knew it wasn't the same.

After having heard one from about 10 yards behind some cedars, my bet is on bear...  :yike:

I was calling yotes about 15yrs ago on my familys property in Battle Ground Wa and I called 4 about 1 hr no yotes so I keep it up for about 30 minits and my buddy was in anouther stand waiting and I could see him from my position and he keep pointing to the north of me and trying to tell me somthing....So like a dummy I keep calling and calling for yotes!  Little did I know or see nor hear I was being stocked by a 190 cougar!  I didnt know until the sound you speak of....I'll never forget the sound. I WAS 20YRDS FROM BEING DINNER!!   I would say it was COUGAR  they are still out here and close in.
The wife said if I go hunting 1 more time, she's going 2 leave me!!  Gosh I'm gonna miss her.

I never thought of a cougar.  Just assumed a cougar wouldnt make any sounds or would make really identifiable sounds.  That would explain why it was so silent in brush that thick.  Scary thought! :yike:

Funny thing is my boxer made a very similar sound to what I heard that day, gave me the chills.  He was looking out the living room window when someone was walking in front of our house.  He made two of the huff sounds then started a real low growl until the person was past our house.  He sounded like he was a bull about to charge a matador. :chuckle: I was thinking whatever I heard sounded big but if my 70lbs dog can make a sound that deep maybe it was a coyote after all.
