Home made apple dispenser for baiting?
« on: September 28, 2013, 08:23:58 PM »
With working tons of overtime and having my first kid on the way I am thinking of trying to make a device which would limit the amount of apples for the deer to eat.   I have as them come in and eat 50lbs in 2 days and I can't get away and rebait that often.  Any ideas on what I can do?  Thinking of a 5 gallon bucket with a 3" piece of conduit coming out of the bottom with a 45 degree kick to the ground?

Ya!   Those guys are the worst.  They killed 50lbs in one night.  I am in mason county  so not too many.

for a cheap, easy to do feeder- get the black corrugated drain pipe from home depot or wherever- ususally 3-4" diameter. an 8 foot piece is like 8$, and makes 2 feeders.. bend one end of it in a J shape- and use wire to get it to stay bent like this- put knife slits in the underside of the bend- helps rain water drain out. tie it to a tree or post- bent end down, obviously. fill it and cap the top (or put a piece of plastic bag over the top) to keep rain out. these little feeders work well with shell corn, havent tried them with something as big as apples. we used to use them down south where there were hogs (hogs are hard on feeders) or where we were concerned someone might mess with, or take, your feeder.. for the price you cant beat it..

How do you meter the apples out?

with shell corn or other feed the J bend in the pipe at the bottom allows it to gravity feed down, and when i first put it out I would put a little corn on the ground by it to encourage them to find it- with apples I'd get the biggest pipe diameter they have- it should still work- especially with smaller apples..

Now that is interesting... You could put a 5 gal bucket on the top of the pipe with a hole in the bottom.  I am not sure if it would feed the tube or not but it would proivde some buffer.
