Oh man,  I kid down there picked up a non cliped king and kept it.  He said it was a silver.  I said OK, do silvers have dots on their tail and black mouth?  Hmmmm,  He had ripped out gills.  He was pretty luck the F&G did not come down.  He was 19 or 20 years old.

Without a good look they are tough to tell apart a lot of silvers have black mouths with white gums.

If you can't tell a king from a silver you may want to stay the hell away from me on the river. Plus you might want to learn.

I don't have a problem, I see them literally every day.  I'm saying that I have seen a few that are pretty strange. I had a coho that was clipped with a black mouth very little white around the gums and a strange spot pattern. Had a pit tag in it definitely a coho.

How is staying away from the river going to make you learn though? You'd think doing it more and paying attention would help. Through-out the spawning season both fish undergo huge changes and at times DO look at times look alike. That's kinda like saying, Man you cant shoot, you better stop picking up a firearm until you can hit the target better. :dunno:

Smossy,, I have been around salmon all my life. (I'm 56 years old). I have seen salmon in ALL forms of the spawn. (I helped in a hatchery when I was in boy scouts as one of my Eagle Scout projects) I don't care what part of the spawn a salmon is in yes ( if you know what your fishing for) you can tell the difference.  Not being able to tell the difference (as in your shooting example) is like saying " I that that doe was a buck because it was a deer.

And just to be clear I am being an ass on this because I had to learn how to tell the difference between the 5 species of salmon before I was 10 years old. So before someone says anything about this I have been catching salmon from the time I was in 2nd grade. I HAD to learn how to tell the difference, and y'all are no different.

I have seen quite a few silvers with "black mouths" then the tail is a give away.

I went down there last night to try to pick up a Coho.  I went through about 15 fish.  Some had fungus on them.  I did pick up a few dolly varden.

It is illegal to remove from the water and or keep Dolly Varden from the Puyallup river. They are a protected species unless specified legal to fish for on any given piece of water.
