I would of done the exact same thing....Everbody goes ( or should) into the woods with more then a couple bullets in hand...Im 99% sure he wasent out of ammo to finish her off with...good job. Watching an animal geeting stonned to death like some old 1800 century slave would of set me off to!! >:(

Im like you and would have done the same thing. A few years ago I watched a guy shoot a mulie buck ,watched him fall into the fence still kicking and bawling, this guy set down and started eating lunch!!!!!!!!! I walked up to him and told him to put him down and he told me "he's gonna die I dont want to waste another bullett" I was PISSED.I didnt know what the law would say about shooting him so I walked over and cut his throat. Walked back over to the "hunter" and told him if he didnt have respect for the animal to stay home. Told my wife about it that night and she freaked saying the guy could have shot me yada, yada, yada. Bottom line is if I see an a@@hole letting an animal suffer Ill put the critter down and take whatever lumps come my way. Good job NorsePeak, Im glad you confronted this guy.

Until an animal is tagged it belongs to the state, not to any individual.  If it is alive and the nitwit that shot is hasn’t finished the job, you can shoot it and tag it and it then belongs to you.  That would get their attention.

"he's gonna die I dont want to waste another bullett"

There something so wrong with this mentality!  That guy is going to die someday too, and when his time comes, does he want to suffer needlessly or be quick and done with it? :bash: :bash: :bash: :bash:

Along this same line or maybe not.I have a story.....My hunting partner when i hunted the modern season.Came across a women who had just hit a cow elk by the dump in Hobart. Here car was pretty much destroyed.Mean while the elk was belowing on the side of the road trying to get up.So my friend not having a gun had enough of that and picked up the biggest rock he could lift. Then preceeds to drop it on the cow elks head.Of course he gets done and looks over at the face of the lady and another guy that stopped. He said it was priceless!!!!!!!!!!Sometimes thou you have to do what you have to do.That said that doesnt excuse the guy.........

It's interesting to see the range of replies to this topic.  Many of you talked about the danger of the situation.  I agree it was a dangerous move, but when began to approach him, he was unarmed, and I was armed with a rifle.  Also, I'm a big strong guy, 6'3" 235lbs, so when I was marching at the guy with rifle in hand, his eyes were about as big as basketballs and he was backing up quickly.  And if was afraid to shoot a dying animal I doubt he would have the stones to shoot at a person.

As for the fiance, well as she puts it "I thought is was going to have to scrape kung phooey off of my new rifle."  Those are her words!  She has been around the woods and hunting long enough to know whats right and wrong, and she was just as pissed as I was.

Should I have been a little more diplomatic, yeah probably, but I gurantee the next animal that guys shoots he'll make sure to dispatch it quickly.  I just think that that's how stupid need to be delt with because being P.C. and trying not to hurt their feelings is NOT working.  Just look at our government.

I shouldn't be laughing as its serious, but I was picturing his look and that shiny new gun being thumped along side his head....

I agree with what you did but I wouldn't have done it with a kid or my fiance there b/c of the chance of putting them in danger. :twocents:

She could probably take care of herself.   I'm surprised he wasn't pulling her off of him and her beating him over the head with a big stick.

Ahh... I failed to catch that he was unarmed.  I was assuming that due to him shooting it he was still armed.

Norsepeak. I agree with your approach. I would have done the same. I have no problem correcting some freaking *censored*, in town, at a movie, at the beach, in the woods. I have always lived that way, stay principled, stand up for what is right, even placing my safety on the back burner many, many times.

Would I recommend anyone else do it that way? No.

Would I advise they take a different approach? Probably.

Would I put them down for standing up for what is right? Never.

I say good job.

Holy Crap Ice Man! that is what I was going to say!
