Teanaway late archery

I noticed that unit 335, Teanaway, was open last year from November 20th - December 8th for spike or antlerless late archery. My question is for those who hunted the unit last year for elk? How many bucks(yes bucks) did you guys see. And what caliber of bucks were they? I drew late archey deer permit this year and it is from Nov. 20th - Dec. 8th, same time as late elk archery. Were the bucks still rutting? I am just curious at how may big bucks were seen during that late elk.

I thought I might get more response this way vs. trying to track down any of the 10 hunters who drew it last year.

I didn't hunt it but i'm familiar with the area.  Not sure on the caliber of bucks that are in there at that time of year, but i know there are quite a few.  You may want to hunt the Teanaway Ridge and mason/musser creek areas.  I've been told that people have seen a 30 inch buck also running around the 29 pines area, but those are all the resident deer, obviously you'll be hunting the migratory and some non-migratory deer.  The caliber of bucks i see during modern rifle in the Teanaway dont normally exceed 26 inches wide or so. The Teanaway bucks from what we've harvested all have mass but seldom have the height and width to go along with it.  But again, those are the general rifle season bucks that we hunt at 6000 feet.  You'll see some nice ones though.

Years past there were tremendous buck moving through there off of that Teanaway ridge and some gap, can't remember the name.  I have no idea how the herd is currently.  I would be pretty darn happy to have that tag.  Its also one of those pockets in the state that have a good chance at some non-typical genes.

If you read the latest Game Status & Trends Report, it says the Teanaway and other GMU's to the south have seen a reduction in the deer population of up to 50%, due to "hair loss disease."  Hopefully there are still some good bucks in there, and I'm sure there are, but I'm going to hunt elsewhere  until I hear the deer numbers are back up.

Yup, thats affirmitive.  Regardless of the damn "hair loss" and what the WDFW claims is out there, there are good bucks there year after year....we've taken some nice bucks out of that unit.  I wouldn't ever give that area up.

I have other reasons for not hunting the Teanaway this year, besides the reported lack of deer...I've got a week long elk hunt planned in both Washington and Oregon......therefore, I have no time to hunt mule deer in Washington. If I hunt deer it will be blacktails close to home. But if I can tell myself the Teanaway is not worth hunting because there's no deer, then it makes me feel a whole lot better. 

Honestly though if I had the time to hunt the entire mule deer season I probably WOULD go somewhere other than the Teanaway, probably somewhere up in Chelan or Okanogan is where I'd be headed.

Teanaway's nice because it's close, but that's also why it's overrun with hunters.

Last year on opening day there was a guy behind just about every tree.

cougeyes, we'll have to share a cup of coffee during the general season... I am up there pretty much the entire season.... Gonna do the mountain bike thing this year.. Got tired of this guy year after year dragging nicebucks out on his bike.... Lotta nice area up there even if there are crowds around.. The majority never get a couple hundred yards off the road..

First pic is of my 2005 buck and then my 2006 buck.  And i agree the Teanaway is over ran by hunters. During a good year if you're on a ridge top it may sound like a war zone.

I appreciate all the input. Good thing there will only be me and 9 other hunters in the whole unit for the late draw. Sounds like the area is getting more popular.

I forgot that the elk hunters will be out and about. What is it like during the week with the crowds. I will likely come over for the opener on Tuesday and stay the week. I am sure I will make a few trips the following weeks after since Moses lake is ony about an hour and a half away. I figure the weekends will have most traffic. Weekdays a little quieter.

You shouldn't run into that may people, there are only 9 of you with tags right?  And then the elk hunters, there shouldn't be too many out there, the Teanaway is fairly big.
