HSUS Bankrolling Maine Bear Hunting Ban

"HSUS Bankrolling Maine Bear Hunting Ban

Posted on October 11, 2013

After failing to get legislation passed in Maine this spring, anti-hunting forces have begun work on a ballot initiative that would ban bear hunting over bait, with dogs and bear trapping.  If they collect enough signatures, the question will appear on the November 2014 ballot."

Anti-hunting forces appeal to human emotion through propaganda, not unbiased science and facts.  It is up to all of us to continuously educate non-hunters with facts along with always setting good examples when we are in the outdoors hunting, fishing, camping, etc.

"When my bow falls, so shall the world. When me heart ceases to pump blood to my body, it will all come crashing down. As a hunter, we are bound by duty, nay, bound by our very soul to this world. When a hunter dies we feel it, we sense it, and the world trembles with sorrow. When I die, so shall the world, from the shock of loosing such a great part of ones soul." Ezekiel, Okeanos Hunter

It is VERY easy to take a person that is not against hunting, but has a problem with bear baiting/ hound hunting.......I do it ALL the time!

The very first thing you say is.......bear do NOT have antlers therefore we can not tell from a reasonable distance whether the bear is female, or male.....I ALWAYS add that most ethical hunters shoot boars (males) I let them know that I was a bait hunter, and that 99.9% of the time cubs would show at the bait first, then the sow would show....therefore I would not shoot. I would wait for a singular boar to walk in with NO CUBS PRESENT!

I would then shift to hound hunters, again I would say that ethical hunters shoot boars, unless the sow is old, or sick (in the hunters opinion, old age ect.) A treed bear is easy to see genitals (the penis) these are the bears that are ethically taken.

I then switch back to spot, and stock bear hunting.......I tell them that if a hunter sees a bear from a hundred yards out, and shoots he has NO IDEA WHAT HE SHOT......Now out walks 2 cubs after the shot...the hunter has now killed 3 bear (the cubs have no sow) they will die a slow death because of NOT baiting, or hound hunting.......I have yet to have one person tell me AFTER I explain this stick to their preconceived ideas.

In my opinion this should be used as a defense, and people that are not radicals can be changed with REASON. This should have been used to prevent the ban in this state! Whether you agree with everything I said, or not, it has convinced more than a few people!

Bowbuild,
You are right but it is oh so hard to get all that into a 30 second commercial that will grab peoples attention and make them listen. That's the initiative process for you. I hate it because most people make their decision on a sound byte.

But, it's not hard to explain it to news teams that can, and will (with enough controversy) a reasonable argument. The people on the "NO" side (hunters) should be spewing this in every corner of that state!

They should have a slogan...."Save the cubs" ETHICAL HUNTERS only shoot what they can identify....baiting, and hound hunting IS the ethical answer to humane bear population control! I would have this on large signs with a website that explained it!
