I have to vent...
« on: October 20, 2013, 02:51:32 AM »
So just found out today. My two key spots that I spent a few years discovering, scouting (up to 3-4 days a week at times) now have brand new roads punched through on them. Not just near the spots. The roads literally go right on top of the exact spots. I know thats one of those things you just have to deal with when hunting on timber lands but still, majorly sucks. This means they will be cutting the surrounding timber that makes up the spots, nearly eliminating any mature timber within a half mile radius or more of my spots. One is a bench, was just far enough off the roads to keep it hidden. On the bench and above it was dark timber with little underbrush except where a perfect strand of alders ran through. below the bench was 200-300 yards of more open timber with lots of feed, grass and such. Just below that timber is a 3-4 year old clear cut. Above the bench is more bigger timber with grassy overgrown skid roads. That bench, esp the stretch of alders, is always rubbed raw every rut. The other spot is a mellow slope of 25 year old timber or so. On all sides of it is 10-15 year old firs. To the south of it the 10-15 year old firs are about 40 yards wide then a 10-20 yard wide strand of alders, then a 10 yard wide strand of thick belly crawling christmas tree size firs. Then its powerlines, so a 40 -50 yard wide strip of grass, then 50-75 yards of mixed timber then a big 3-4 year old clear cut. I put such a long time putting all the pieces of the puzzle together. Now the exact spots I'v killed bucks and bugled a couple bulls and am ALWAYS able to get on deer, are roads and the timber is about to get cut. Guess time will only tell how much this will change my hunts. I may have to discover a few new key spots, right now I am just hoping it doesnt mess up my late muzzy elk hunt too much this year. I guess its just how things go in the timber land, just had to vent, haha

I've had the same thing happen several times also. The elk 'honey hole' I used to hunt was logged after taking at least 5 branched bulls in it and the surrounding patches in about 7 years! It took me a couple years to find another one but it's paid off with 3 bulls in 5 years. The animals will still be in that area but will change their bedding and feeding habits up considerably.

Same for me with the elk area.  They logged it this year.  My spot was 80 miles away though and I never seem to have the spare $30-40 to go there for a scouting trip.  I'll just hunt a new area blind over the next few years and learn it on the fly.

I know how you feel.  :bash:
I've been venting lately too but my situation is caused by that stomach virus going around.  :chuckle: :chuckle:
