Elk Down
« on: November 03, 2013, 12:05:23 AM »
My hunting partner and I did well today. He got a 5x5 and I got this 5x4 not a huge bull but a legal one..  He shot his bull 1st and then the rest of the herd started running. I didn't see another legal bull but then I spotted a legal bull running about to jump into the timber, had to make a quick shot at 240yds. Took out the front shoulder but he still made me chase him a little over a mile or so before I could finally put him down. I have to say when it was all over I have the upmost respect for these animals. His shoulder was destroyed, hole in his lung, a broken rear leg and finally a shot to his neck. This has been the toughest elk I have ever shot. Most bulls I have shot with my 7mm rem. mag 160gr. accubonds  either drop or go 30yds.  Not this bull he was just tough!!!!!

Nice bull. Curious though, how long did you give him to lay down before following?

I gave him about a 1/2 hour as I helped my buddy gut out his elk and get a few pictures plus it was still too dark in the timber. I wanted to wait until I could see good in the timber.  I jumped him bedded 50yds. in and the chase was on.
