Kid's First Upland Hunt near Tri-Cities
« on: November 03, 2013, 08:13:39 AM »
I'm new to the board. Been hunting for over 30 years, mostly in the Columbia Basin. Gave it up a few years ago to raise kids. Also needed to lower my blood pressure after seeing the hunting conditions outside of Seattle. Kids are older and this is my son's first season carrying a gun. I will be visiting family in Richland next weekend and was hoping to get him on some small game (pheasant, quail, rabbits, etc.). I used to hike the railroad tracks above Charbonneau, but I can't tell if that is still legal. My favorite quail and rabbit spot is now a county park. Anyone willing to share some spots worth trying? I was thinking about the Big Flat area, Wallula, or the Patterson area. Anybody know if you can still hike the tracks along the Snake or the shoreline above McNary Dam? Thanks for the help!

Welcome to the forum and more importantly, welcome back to hunting!
I can't help w/info on hunting the tracks or by Mcnary.
However, Walula and Big Flats can be a pretty good choice. Another spot to consider is Sunnyside Game area. You'll find Quail, pheasant and the occassional bunny............if you have a dog, otherwise you'll have to just hope you stumble into game. (It happens, just not very often)

There's birds and rabbits in all of those areas, Wallula, and I believe Big Flat are nontoxic shot areas. DO NOT hike the train tracks you will be prosecuted for trespassing if you are caught! As far as I know you can still hunt Charbonneau, and there is also feel free to hunt in that area...

Use the GoHunt feature on the wdfw website, several days worth to discover just on that.

Thanks for the responses. Bummed about the tracks. It used to be fun walking both for game and just interesting sights. I "discovered" them when a railroader gave me a ride to some draws. Guess things change after 30 years. We'll see how things go this weekend. I think he'll be thrilled at the chance to hike around. Deer and grouse hunting over here involved too much sitting with nothing to look at.
