Shooting sticks, bi-pod, walking stick, or nothing?
« on: November 08, 2013, 05:58:17 PM »
I love having a solid rest, and I really love being able to shoot prone with a bi-pod. The thing is, on the west side in timber land, chances to be able to go prone, or even sitting are few and far between. I mostly still hunt through 15-30 year old timber. Most shots are 20-75 yards. Sometimse I get farther ones on the edges of some clearcutts or rock pits. I have used a couple of walking sticks before as a makeshift bipod when target shooting and would love to figure out something similar for hunting. It is just that there are plenty of times that if I took that spare second to fumble with them, I wouldnt have a shot. I have thought about trying just a walking stick with a rest at the top, like Primos triggerstick. But then I would be stuck with that in my hand all day. When working through some brush I dont like the idea of having to tote it around. Is a rest like this something you would take into the timber? I haddnt thought about it much till this early muzzy season when I missed a couple in the brush after chasing uphill, I was out of breath and shaky. Just a walking stick would have made it easier to calm the motion of the gun and make myself focus a hair more. I havent had any other misses then those when less than 100 yards, so its probably something I am over thinking. Any opinions?

From my coyote hunting side of it, I'd carry my BogPog at the most common adjustment you would most likely use them at. It's a steady rest. You will have to get used to the feel of it. It was weird using them to begin with. I also have shooting stix that weigh is about zero and you don't even know you have them. I think too many people worry about extremely small weights of things when hiking. I hope this came across valid instead of some crazy mumble jumble.
I couldn't care less about what anybody says..............

I have a bipod from cabelas I like. I keep it the height it gets used at most andq carry it my left hand. It doubles as a light duty walking stick this way. It's pretty fast to use, I've never lost a shot opportunity because of it.
