Any first hand with Hornady Great Plains?
« on: November 24, 2013, 04:36:24 PM »
I picked up a box after seeing how badly my original bullet choice deflected off of a twig or two. I have heard good things. I got the 385 grain .50 cal. Looking to see where it is on paper and make sure my gun likes em well enough on tuesday then hitting coweeman wed for my cow tag I drew. Was just curious as to the first hand some might be able to share. I have seen a few different things used this year. This is my first year muzzy. And in the crap I am normally hunting in (50 yard tops 90% of the time) I am sold on trying to find a heavy conical that my gun may like. The great plains bullets were just in my face at the store and not too spendy so I thought I would start trying with those first.

I have used them years ago worked fine on animals my gun never really seemed to like them so I switched to copper jacketed bullets once they became legal.

I heard of some people getting them partly down there barrel and getting stuck. I always wanted to try them though. I'm with ya on heavy bullets though. I've seen a few deflections on deer and elk with the lighter maxiball and maxi hunter bullets.

The GP bullets are usually the bullet I shoot out of both of my sidelock guns. They shoot well and kill game, not much more I can ask of them.

My side lock doesn't shoot them very well. Very erratic. I couldn't find a powder charge that would shoot them well. But I believe that was just my gun. I tried them in my wife's t/c firehawk and got one very stuck half way down the barrel. So I just use maxi balls.
