Oregon buck down!
« on: November 25, 2013, 08:24:46 PM »
Today 4 months + of scouting, trail cam photos, and setting up stands came together. I started scouting this property in late july… at one point I had 5 cams on it, but only a few were getting quality deer pics. Based on what I was seeing I decided to hang my stand on the edge of a draw. Around mid august I started using apples to entice any deer to stop and hang out for a few…. One day in august I got some pics of 2 really nice bucks together in the afternoon, those would be the ONLY pics of these two that I would get in the daylight until the 20th of NOV. On the 20th, I took a day off to help my buddy try and fill his ML tag. I checked my cam the next day to find that the Big 4X4 I was after spent the entire morning there with a few of his lady friends!!! This was the second set of day pics…. My number 2 buck also showed up to hang out!! Needless to say I was depressed,  I thought well, %$#@@@@ that was my chance! But I knew I had to keep after it…. Hours and hours in stand is the name of the game when your hunting mature blacktails. I got up this morning hoping today was the day, I hiked down to my stand at 530 am and enjoyed the 20 degree temps while waiting for light. First light came and a doe decided she was hungry… I watched her for 30 min or so and she moved on. The next 3 plus hours were very quiet, just like most days.. no deer moving that I could hear or see…. I began reading a hunting story… around 1030 I was rudely bothered from my reading by what sounded like a deer jumping the old fence behind my stand… I grabbed my bow, assuming it was just another doe, but you never know. I was quite surprised when my number 2 buck stepped out from behind a tree on the main trail… mind you this was the FIRST time my eyes saw either buck in person…. I gained composure and sent my arrow into his chest as he was quartering away at under 15 yrds… a very short blood trail later led me to my 2nd biggest blacktail I have arrowed to date! Hes not “hank” but a shooter non the less.

Very nice bucks. Congrats. I love using apples and cams to get the deer coming in. It appears your field photo did not work for me.

I am after a couple of good ones too, but most of my pics have been nocturnal. I have about 50 hours in my blind since the 16th. The cold weather should get them coming in at all times of the day.

Way to stick it out!  It's tough to get in a stand that early and sit in this cold weather, nice job.

Thanks! its not easy sitting in the cold, but I knew with the activity in the last week that anyday at anytime could be "That" day so I had to stick it out...
