back from deer hunt and figured out why they dissappeared
« on: December 02, 2013, 10:59:49 AM »
My old man, buddy and I got back yesterday from 117 empty handed. My dad was up all week and my buddy and I went up Tuesday night through yesterday. My dad saw about a half dozen bucks the first few days but only two were legal and no shot chances. My first morning had me in the tree stand and about 11:00 I heard a crashing in the trees behind me and out ran a doe below me and a few seconds later a nice big 5x5 ran out and he was panting and I could see his breath. I sat and watched him follow this doe about 55 yards away but never got a shot. It was frustrating but I got to see him with his nose up her butt for over 5 minutes. After that I only saw a handful of does and a little two point. From there is was like somebody turned off the light switch and we stopped seeing ANY deer. The weather was perfect and we were getting picture on our cameras but all at night. We were dumbfounded and couldn't figure it out until Saturday morning when I was greeted to the sound of a wolf howling up the ridge behind us.  :bash: :bash: That pretty much explained why they stopped moving during the day. Oh well, it was still a fun trip.

Hey Adam,

Too bad you couldn't get a shot at the 5x5.  Dang wolves are everywhere now.  Messed up our early archery elk hunt too, plus the Conrad fire closures.  Tough year!  I didn't bother to go over and try late archery elk, as I'm out of vacation for the year.  I went over to Entiat and filled my doe tag on Friday instead.  We still need to get out later this season for some Duck/goose hunts.

The 5x5 I saw was a very nice buck. I have two nice whities on my wall and this one was bigger then both of them. It was pretty neat to watch him work that doe but just wish she would have worked up towards my stand and not into the trees. If only I had my rifle he would have been dead  :chuckle:

Let me know when you want to go duck hunting. I am ready! Congrats on filling the doe tag as well. Sounds like you have had a pretty solid season!

No pics of wolves but I did get a handful of solid bucks on camera. My dad downloaded them to his computer up there and will be sending me them soon. I will post them when I get them.
