It's gonna be hard to beat one of the subie models for what you're looking for.

I have a Volvo XC70 - way more fun to drive and better ride in my opinion than the same generation Subie but premium gas and a bit lower MPG would probably be a deal killer if I had a long commute.  Not to mention the maintenance gets out of control pretty quick with the euro cars.  I do all of my work myself other than major jobs.  You save a ton of money buying your own parts online.  It's like $100 for a "service" at the Vo dealer that's basically just an oil change and inspecting a few things...

I also wouldn't be happy with the XC as our only AWD - my Dodge Ram Cummins does most of the off-road miles for hunting season, although I'll often take the Volvo to a wilderness trailhead to "fit in" a bit better.

I drove by a trailhead a few years back during high buck with 2 pickups with apparently slashed tires.  All of the Subies and Honda Civic type rigs seemed to be fine... wasn't too hard to figure that one out!

My kids and friends all drive Subaru's and I drive a Volvo S60 AWD.  I have never had any issues with my Volvo but the Subaru's are a bit more rugged and seem to do much better offroad but the Volvo is a really nice ride!

Another +1 for the Subaru. Best AWD system I have driven (with Audi being up there too). Unless ground clearance is an issue I actually prefer driving my outback in the snow over my Tacoma 4x4 - probably has something to do with weight distribution in my often empty truck.

One of my Battalion Chiefs is as redneck as they come, and a brilliant firemen. He often states how well his wife's Subaru cars over the years have lasted way longer than he would expect them to. Sounds like oil changes are easy to do, and the AWD is flawless. I would forget about the hippy crap and get a Subaru.

I like this site

http://www.fueleconomy.gov/Feg/bymodel/2013_Toyota_RAV4.shtml

pretty competitive with the forester looks like, I'll have to check those out too.

The RAV4s are nice, and you cannot go wrong with a Toyota, for the most part, regarding dependability.  It seems, subjectively, that you might lose cargo area with the RAV4, but I have not seen direct comparisons.

The other plus for the Forester is that it is consistently ranked as one of the safest in crash tests, at least during the time that we were in the market, if that is a consideration.

Only in Washington would a conversation about hunting trucks digress into a Subaru fangasm!

The topic is All-Wheel Drive Car

Nobody mentioned trucks.

From that fueleconomy.gov site, these seem like 4 of cars in the same class:

Comparison

Out of those 4, I think the forester would be the best.
May I always be the kind of person my dog thinks I am.
