Blacktail question for late muzzy/archery
« on: December 07, 2013, 03:45:21 PM »
So I'm hunting late muzzleloader, and I'm seeing quite a bit of sign, including a monstrous rub line. I have a trail cam up on the trail with apples, so a few questions I have are, how long will a buck use their rub line (till their antlers fall off)? How often will they use that trail? And since it's below freezing right now, will they eat the frozen apples?

Good questions and I don't really have answers. I would think the bucks would be about done with checking their rubs, since even the does that didn't get bred the first time should have already come into heat for the second time by now, and I would think most, if not all, rutting activity would be over by now. But I'd still stick with what you're doing, I'm not sure what would be a better plan.

I've had elk eating my frozen apples recently so I'd guess the deer would too. Might be better if they are small apples.

Ok, thanks, I guess I was hoping maybe bucks would still use their rubs regardless of wether the rut was on or not.

They may, I just don't know. The trail camera should answer that question. Problem is I bet most activity will be at night.

Hit it hard today in 437 saw nine deer one huge buck too far of course he was running the does so I think there's still a few ruttin. As for the rubs like it was said check the cams blacktails are just nuts on public ground I've never seen a consitant pattern besides the every third day but that's my area and I think each area will be different depending on predators. Again just my opinion from what I've seen.

Yea, a lot of coyotes in my area, guess I was hoping someone has done some trailcam research on how long a buck tends to a rub line.
