Snoop through his steelhead gear.  If he drifts then he may use a lot of corkies and such.  A bag full of corkies or hooks is a great gift and one that he will use.  I can not stress enough a bag full of the small stuff is price less!

This remind me of something that happened to me several years ago.  A gal I was dating daughter really wanted to get me something I would use for my birthday.  So she decided on fishing gear.  I have long ago used the stuff up but, the bag full of corkies, yarn, and hooks was one of the best most thought out presents anyone has ever got me.

Also the Havalon is a great choice.
