Horn coloring and mount question
« on: November 07, 2008, 03:17:31 PM »
I have a nice bt rack that I shot a few years ago and decided not to mount (kicking myself now for not doing so).  Anyway, the horns have an awesome rust/red color to them but they have faded a bit on one side.  I have two questions for you all.  First, can the color be matched and restored in the faded area?  Second, if I decided I wanted a mount (say a shoulder mount) of the animal now, can that be done?  Your opinions would be appeciated.

The answer to your second question is definately! Bucklucky or Michelle Nelson are commercial taxidermists on this site that would do a great job for you on a remount! You just need a blacktail cape and if necessary, your taxidermist can help you obtain one but the cape will be an additional cost. I am not an expert on coloring antlers although I have done a few. Michelle Nelson did a piece on coloring antlers a while back I think so she could tell you more. Good luck!

Yes the color can be matched pretty well. And yes you can mount it like Hunting Cowboy stated. Most taxidermists will have capes in stock, I do in fact have some blacktail capes.  As for coloring I would have to see the antlers to color them corectly, Its probably a pretty easy deal on those . There are some taxis that arent real good at coloring antlers and others that are real good.

Thanks Hunting Cowboy and bucklucky for the information.  I really regret not mounting it when I shot it.  Didnt really cross my mind in the field to take care of the cape.  My pops and I just meat hunt and didnt really think about it as a trophy.  Once I got it home I thought about it and took the head somewhere and got it looked at but decided not to have it mounted.  It just has nice color and mass on it for a bt.  Now I look at it and realize I likely wont shoot another like it and kick myself for not having it mounted.  I will see if I can find a pic or two of the rack and post them.

I will have to get ahold of you one of these days bucklucky to see what can be done.

Thanks again guys.
