i liked fishing down there when it was more of a local show, 10+ years ago.  i could run down after school for a few hours and fish just about anywhere i wanted to.  now there's 100+ guys fishing it on any given weekday during the peak of the season, and the amount of garbage is insane.  i can't even get away from the crowds by walking way down in the fields any more.

i think i put in about an hour and a half between 3 trips this past year...i just can't handle that kind of pressure.
you can still get gas in heaven, and a drink in kingdom come,
in the meantime, i'll be cleaning my gun

That fishery is nowhere near good enough to put up with the crowd that typically is there, combined with the "aged" quality of many of the fish.

Even years ago my partner said, "Next time we think about going to the Skookumchuck, let's just go scout for elk!"
Some guys like it. Not for me.

Today, I stopped by just to look. As I walked up just downstream of the hatchery I saw a little fishy sitting on the bank. He looked pretty dark. Not sure exactly what he was...

I live 15 minutes away from it and hardly ever fish it.  I would rather drive to the lower Chehalis or Nooch.  When I do fish it, it is early on and before the Tacoma and Oly crowd ( the guys who look like they just fell out of a Cabela's display) get there.

We went to the skook today. Caught some trout on the flyrod but no salmon or steelies. Didn't see any either. Had the place to ourselves and found some great holding water for when the run is a little stronger.
Going to the nisqually in the morning. Hoping to have better luck.

You would be much better off fishing the river that the Skook dumps into and fishing for coho, big coho at that!   :twocents:

What is that, the Chehalis? Not very familiar with it. I know my dad and his buddies were doing well on it with a boat but I have no idea what the bank fishing is like.

Yes.  There are a few spots if you look around that you can 'bank maggot" fish.  I'll be one of them in a couple of days.  This run wil be all done by the end of next week.  Git it while you can.
