Quality gunsmiths in the Spokane area?
« on: December 16, 2013, 12:22:01 PM »
Hello, all.

I would be grateful for recommendations from any of you who have had good experiences with quality gunsmiths who are located in the Spokane area. Who has done good work for you at a reasonable price? I am hoping to find someone who would do a good job on a 300 Savage lever action. The work would involve tuning up the barrel (or, if necessary, replacing it) and replacing the stock. PMs are welcome.

Thanks for your help, if you can offer any, and Happy Holidays to everyone reading this post!

I have used Mountain shadow arms up on Newport HWY. Did good work but was slow. I've heard the same from others as well. Brocks on division is the other big name in town.  Not sure if there are others now or not. If I were you I would replace the stock yourself though.  It will be way cheaper to find it on the internet and do it than to pay someone else to do it.

Eric at Mountain Shadow is top notch.  Just don't be in a hurry to get it back.  I expect the wait and sacrifice knowing I am getting the job done right.

pass on Brocks.  no one i know has had good experiences there, including me.  i'll never darken their door again.

i personally did not have a good experience with Mountain shadow.  others have.  i won't go back unless he had something i really needed.

Roger Biesen gets a lot of press for his customs, but he's a regular-old gunsmith, too.  he's a great guy who i've had numerous positive dealings with.

and the guys at Sharp Shooting probably have a line on a good smith.

Thanks for the replies, Jburke, dscubame, and 724wd.

I appreciate the gunsmithing food for thought.

Just to muddy the water a bit. I have had great experiences with brocks, on the other hand mountain shadow arms took forever and where anything but friendly. I really don't know if i caught them at a bad time or what.  Brocks saved me a bunch of money thou
I've slowed down enough in my old age to finally let the game catch up to me

There are some little known do it yourself trick I have used on several 99's I have owned over the years. Relieving the front stock wood that mortises into the front of the action. Not alot, just enough to relieve contact. You can also pull the rear screw holding the sear spring and slip a thin washer between spring and frame, then re insert screw. You have to play with several thicknesses to get it right, but I have consistently acheived between 3-4#'s, and combined with the stock trick, marry that with some well tuned handloads, on a good gun be gettimg 1/2" groups!
