best coyote yet
« on: January 06, 2014, 09:05:17 PM »
This is one of a pair that I called in last Thursday.  They came over a ridge at about 400 yards, running like greyhounds. I had them both in my Leupold at 9X, and what a picture.  They were running through some yellow grass, ears laid back, and eyes were mere slits. Just hammer time!  I barked when they hit about 50 yds. to stop them, and took the lead animal, worked the bolt, and got on the second one....running...CLICK!  The bolt had failed to pick up the second round.  The round was  hung up just enough to allow the bolt to slide right over it.  So lost my chance for a double, but I am very happy with the outcome, and I think this is the best fur I have ever seen on a coyote, for both color, and density/fineness.

Looks like a male dog for some reason I've only ever shot females wish I could find some good ground to hunt over where you live especially along the Touchet river. So hard to find ground to hunt anymore everything is posted
There's no reason to miss

Nice dog!  That looks like a long-action gun.  In your haste to shoot the second dog, you probably didn't pull the bolt back all the way to clear the back of the next cartridge.   :twocents:
If it was easy, everybody would be doing it.

When Bernie Madoff did it, it's called a "Ponzi Scheme"
When Government does it, it's called "Social Security"

I have taken 12 since Nov. tenth, and only two were females....I have no idea why, but I like it.  The call is an open reed mouth call.

The rifle is a Winchester M. 70 in .222.  I know what the problem is, I just need to pay attention ALL of the time!  If the cartridges are placed forward in the magazine, the front of the round is high, and the rear of the cartridge is too low for the bolt to pick it up, due to the angle.  It doesn't take much.

No to the rug...I have too many rugs/mounts for the wall space already, but I thought about it!  Shoot, I have a monster wolf rug, and it's in the garage IN A BOX!!!  (That has to change!)

Yes, the open hunting property along the Touchet river is getting hammered

Ok, I checked out the Coyote Madness Team thing...hmmm.  Not sure it is for me, but thanks.  Since this is my first year hunting coyotes in this area, I do expect to do better next year.  MUCH better!
