Afternoon Hunt
« on: January 12, 2014, 08:48:30 PM »
Did a quick afternoon setup, ended up with four geese between my buddy and I. Not bad for an afternoon hunt.

It was actually out on a public hunt corn stubble field. Would have ended up with more geese except some idiot came out into the field with no decoys just a blind, and set up right where the geese would circle and lock on to our spread. He started sky blasting them as they were coming into our spread. I have never been so disgusted at another hunter before. Couldn't do anything about it because the rules for the field allow up to 3 groups on this field as long as they are a safe distance away from eachother. Our dog actually retrieved one of his geese he sky blasted. This guy had the balls to come ask for his goose back at the end of the day when we were packing up. UNBELIEVABLE! What are some ways you guys would have handled a situation like this? I don't think there is anything illegal about it? Maybe just against the good hunters code of conduct?

That sucks. Sorry to hear you got screwed like that. I personally don't set up in a field if somene else is already there. Don't care how big a field it is, I just move on. That said- others have no problem setting up on top of me. One trick I use is to set up so that i leave no room in the field for someone to down wind me. It doesn't always work, but it works enough that it makes hunting public fields tolerable at times. I am not one of those guys who goes over and asks others to join me or my group. I am one of those guys who gets their early and sets up the most effective spread that I can to alleviate intrusion. I do feel for you. I hate having all your hard work and preperation compromised by some guy who shows up late and just wants to hear his gun go off. On the bird retrieval- if he made no outward sign of trying to retrieve that goose, I would have told him to pound sand. If he was after it and your dog got it first and brought it to you- I would hand it over no questions asked.

You never know what some people a thinking. I would give the bird back and use the oppertunity to let him know how I felt about the situation.

I agree, giving the bird back is the right thing to do. I guess im still just shocked somebody would shoot geese coming into another guys spread. Full Choke, im with you, if someone is set up in a field or on the water even close to a spot I wanted to go to, I give them their space and respect so they can have a good hunt. I whish everyone hunted that way.

Sorry to hear about the unsportsmans like conduct that interrupted your hunt.  Good job with your perserverance to bring home some birds.  I'd given him 'his' bird back and let him know that his actions were out of line, and that next time he should give others more space.  Remind him that its more about the experience than the number of birds.  Respect others attempt to have an enjoyable experience and not be so greedy trying to steal others birds that they have worked hard for.   :twocents:
