I ended up going with the Nikon coyote specialist 4x12. found it for $200 even. Went out shooting today to sight it in and test out my new gun. Got to this group with only 14 rounds. Was shooting 75gr hornady BTHP's at about 125 yards. Not the tightest group ever, but I'm happy for the first time using it.

That's a dead dog...

I saw that Nikon isn't doing that $199 anymore. Is that where you bought yours from?

That's a good group, considering the Coyote Special reticle really isn't a target reticle.  those circles are great for fast acquisition though.  I have one, and like it. I think the Coyote Special is just a tricked out Buckmasters scope.  Got one of those, too!

Well, take my review for what its worth, seeing as it's the first scope I've ever bought, and I've only shot 14 rounds through it, but I love it.

I know that a lot don't feel the same way. Heredoggy is correct, the reticle sucks for target. It is a broad open circle. google nikons predator bdc reticle, you will see. But I don't think it's as bad as everyone seems to make it out to be. I got that grouping so it cant be too terrible. I think that it will be even better for moving objects. and dog sized objects. And seeing as it was only $200 dollars to my door, not a bad deal. Even comes with a flash guard. I would suggest it for sure. But I would also recommend heading to a sports store and checking out the reticle in real life. That is what makes or breaks it. I love it, others don't. Just personal preference.

But we'll see over time if i feel the same way  :chuckle:

One more con, a little long for an AR. Longer than I was looking for at least. Nothing outstanding, but I would have preferred something more compact. Here is a pic for reference.

Save ALL of your 223 brass.

Good for you on the scope purchase.

Yup, I have a buddy that has a full reload station, so I've been saving it before I even owned an AR. Atleast it's a bit more fun scavenging for brass with frozen fingers when I get to play with some of it!   :chuckle:

Buy one of those mesh brass catchers. they work great as long as you keep them empty. they will make your gun jam if you let the brass stack up.  :twocents:
In archery we have something like the way of the superior man. When the archer misses the center of the target, he turns round and seeks for the cause of his failure in himself.

I've seen those... can't justify spending the money on it now, but it would be a nice tool to have!

You got a good deal!  I think when I got mine 3 years ago, the best I could do was $325.  That ARD (Anti-reflective device) alone was a $100 item.  I got ARDs for the rest of my scopes cheaper by getting the ones that are held in by the flip-up scope covers.  I only put scope covers on the front of the scope, because that's the end of the scope that is up when I sling carry it anyway...

Don't waste your money on one of those things.  I had one, and even added a wire extention to keep it open when it got some empties in it, and it was still more trouble than it was worth.  I took a small flap of thin leather and sewed some lengths of small bungee cord into one end so I could loop the cords around and onto the knobs on my scope mount.  the flap hangs over the ejection port and deflects the empties down.  They pile up under the legs of the bipod, and I don't have to look for them in the sagebrush 6 feet away.
