Slow time of Year?
« on: January 20, 2014, 10:11:52 AM »
I made twelve stands over the weekend in some areas that generally produce very well.  Didn't call in a single coyote, let alone bobcat.  I know things are slow sometimes but I was curious if everyone else was having a slow time this week?

Coyotes are starting to pair up and I seem to have trouble getting dogs to commit to locator calls or even food calls.

 :dunno:  anyone else?

Was it foggy?  It has been here, and I've found that hunting on a foggy day is pretty much of a lost cause...  :dunno:
If it was easy, everybody would be doing it.

When Government does it, it's called "Social Security"

Yeah it was foggy.  Why does fog lock down coyotes?

I mean, I put in 13 stands in two days and all I killed was a suicidal snowshoe hare  :dunno:

For some reason, animals don't move around much in the fog.  I think it negates their senses--they can't hear, see or smell very well when it's foggy, so they bed down and wait it out...  :dunno:

Interesting.  I've never noticed that before but it stands to reason.

The last time I hunted this area it was 15 degrees and bluebird skies and I really put the hurt on them.

Reality check I guess   :chuckle:

Yup, I've been skunked so many times on foggy days that I don't even go out if it's foggy.  Never used to get much fog around here, but the last several years it's been bad!  :dunno:

I'll start paying better attention to that in the future

Funny how snow falling makes a hunt 10x better but fog is a bad thing  :P

I got a Foxpro wildfire 2 about 3 weeks ago. First stand out, killed a dog at 30 yds 7 mins into the stand.   Since then, I have called in 3 bobcats and 0 dogs.  I guess that's why we call it Hunting  :dunno:

Went all day yesterday and hunted hard. Made at least a dozen sets and didn't call in a single coyote. Had some great sets yet no coyotes. Tons of tracks and scat. Frustrating to say the least.  We didn't even see one while driving. Strange how some days it seems so easy and then other days are such a struggle.

I'm going to pick on you a second Jonathan.  If you "knocked them dead" and "put the hurt to them" last week, how do you expect to clean up in the same spot this week?

:chuckle: fair enough, I didn't elaborate.  This is a large and hilly area.  I hiked 9.3 miles on the first day and 7.8 on the second.  Never crossed my own trail.

None of the stands I made in either week were within a mile of eachother, it's a very big area that I've hunted for years and I think this is the first time I've been skunked for an entire weekend.

I did make it sound like I was hunting the same stands   :chuckle:

Not smart in this place!  I had to yell at the top of my lungs to get a dumb coyote to stop before it ate my foxpro  :yike:

Don't worry, soon the wolves in Wenas will eat the coyotes
