rimrock area archery
« on: November 15, 2008, 08:56:47 PM »
I live in oregon, but we have a cabin up on rimrock lake.  I have never hunted elk up there, but am planning on hunting with my bow next year.  I was wondering if anybody could give me some advice as far as areas to check out or some info about the herd around there.  When we are up there in the summer we see a ton of elk and some nice bulls just driving the roads.  I assume it is not like that during hunting season, so i was wondering if the elk head up high or just hole up in the thick stuff around there.  Thanks

Yep Backwoods knows that area well.

I have hunted it a little bit a few years ago but that was mostly on the pinegrass ridge area. we always saw elk in there just no spikes :'(

I have hunted that unit a lot and was on elk almost all early season. They seemed to like the really thick stuff this year and where hard to get shots at. We will see how late season go's.

thanks for the input.  I am fairly new to bowhunting and have never shot an elk, so a cow or spike would be great for me.  I also wouldn't mind running into some big bulls for the experience so I am better prepared for when I draw a tag.  As far as putting in for tags I'm a little confused on how the process works up there.  Here in Oregon you only draw your second choice if there are more tags then people put in for them.  Up there instead of drawing individually for every hunt, the hunters number is chosen and then it goes through their choices 1-4 until they can find a hunt that has tags left.  Is this correct.  So would it make sense to put in for really hard to draw permits like the blues for your first choice and then units like rimrock, which are still hard to draw.
