Westside coyote….bleeechhhhh!
« on: February 09, 2014, 04:32:18 AM »

Bobcat and I had a decent day of coyote hunting on Saturday.

I think we did a total of 8 stands, mostly with the FP Scorpion and due to bad batteries we also used a closed reed hand call.

We killed one and missed one. The one we killed was nasty and we did it a favor. The one that was missed then ran closer and stared at us, but it was on property we didn’t have permission to hunt. It was a very large male and looked to have a nice hide.

We called one in to about 60 yards and never saw it but we did see its tracks after the stand was over. We also saw one on property we could hunt but there was someone walking a dog in the area and by the time we could set up the yote was a long ways off and howled at the calls.

Hopefully we can get to a few spots this morning.

Most coyotes are either rubbed or matted by now. November and December are the months to get a good hide. By January they are going down hill.

Seems to me that the very first part of January is when they hit their peak over here.

After that their butts start getting trashy and rubbed.

I'll still hunt them
Kindly do not attempt to cloud the issue with too many facts.

Yup east side dogs are still prime. At least in my neck of the woods. I dumped one on the 31st.  No rubbing at all. Even when I brushed him out, only a tiny bit of under fur was in my brush.

you Definitely did that dog a favor

what did you shoot him with?  looks like multiple wounds or is that just the fur matted with blood?  working 6 days a week 10-12 hour days darn it.  behind my place there are a couple and one large one.  My son almost hit it riding his dirt bike and saw it again this morning about 06:00 on his way up skiing.  It is a not shooting zone.  I would like to try and get one with my bow.  I got a Fox Pro Shockwave for Xmas and only had time to get out twice.  I love hunting the snow.

This was worse than a rubbed yote. It had the mange or something. Open sores, bare skin and horrible stench starters. His ears were so scabby they looked like an old wrestler with cauliflower ear. Definitely the nastiest of the 12 I saw killed this weekend.

It was shot twice with .55 grn .243. Once low in the chest and once high in the back.

We made a few sets this morning but did not get any takers.
