idaho elk hunt
« on: February 06, 2014, 04:34:39 PM »
hey all. im looking to do an otc diy archery elk hunt in idaho this september. im looking for a little help. not asking for anyones honey hole, or where your family has hunted for the past 30 years. just looking for some general info on some areas that havent been hit super hard by the wolves and that dont get hit too awful hard by other hunters. ive done quite a bit of research but some experienced advice would really help. a little about myself. im young. have the gear to be in the bush for 5 to 7 days. im in good shape and will be in even better shape come hunting season. any help would be greatly appreciated. if you would like to pm me please feel free to do so. thanks

Hi elk fever, your looking at the right state for archery elk.  tons of opportunity! the idaho fish and game website has tons of good info on wolf numbers and harvest statistics as well as decent maps of the units.  if i were you id be looking at some of the southern units or southeast units.

I think a lot of it will also depend on what type of terrain and habitat you like and/or want to hunt.  Idaho has a lot of diversity.

North Idaho is steep, lots of timber and dense understory.  Central Idaho is every bit as steep, but not as dense of an understory, more lodgepole and more old burns.  Island Park is a sea of lodgepole, very flat.

In general terms, the East and SE part of the state will give you more open terrain and the greater ability to glass from longer distances.

Good luck.

I try to hunt idaho every year that I'm not successful drawing another out of state elk tag.  I started with rifle draws and success for them with 6pt plus bulls.  Then talked to as many biologist as I could fortunately I was able to corner 5 of them at the rocky mt elk show.  Basically all my research and hunting as took me to the south east units.  Recently was told that lemhi is getting good again with erradication of wolf packs in that area.  Id look hard at island park, tex creek, diamond creek, or bear river.  Lots of elk but lots of people in some of those units like diamond creek.  Similar to eastern oregon hunting the ukiah or starkey.  If u can't take a week and scout maybe try a snake river unit there's some big bulls taken out of there plus not the 14hour drive.  Stop by archery world if your in vancouver we can talk more.
