What Would You Do? Scenario 3
« on: March 28, 2014, 02:53:24 PM »
Three point bull or better area (gotta have at least 3 points on one side); solo bowhunting; 21 September, 20___. You're in the middle of your two week elk hunt. There is a small herd with a vocal 6 point, at least one satellite, and a handfull of cows you've been closing on. You decide you can get no closer with what the terrain offers, and, the wind is starting to swirl. You set up with cover to your back, 60-70 yards away from where you believe the herd is, nock an arrow, and before you finish a few soft cow calls.... crash, Crash, CRash, CRAsh, CRASH! And he's right there, stopped at 25ish yards, screaming in your face.. You did have the presence of mind to come to full draw in those few seconds.. Now, what would you do?  If you say shoot, place an X or dot where you're placing your arrow.

I'm not promoting or discrediting any type of this or that shot, just sparking some off season elky discussion with these threads  ;)

Reminder that if you save the picture to your desktop and open in MS Paint, you'll be able to place a spot, X, or whatever on the critter before you save it back to a jpg and add the marked up pic with your post.

25 yards is getting on the long end of this shot range, but if I did let an arrow fly this is where I would aim.

For the record, I'd probably be conservative and wait on this one.

No shot, I am at full draw and he will turn, when he does I let him have it right up and into the boiler room.
Pain is temporary, achieving the goal is worth it.

I didn't say it would be easy, I said it would be worth it.

 :yeah:

but I would take that shot you described Phantom IF somehow I knew that was the only one I'd be given.

He'd be dead on his feet if you placed that arrow correctly.
Kindly do not attempt to cloud the issue with too many facts.

No shot, I would wait based on the front shoulder angle.  As soon as he turned though, his boiler room would be wide open.  Then it is a no brainer at that point.

I had my first shot at a bull this year that was similar to this one except it was straight on at 15 yards.  I decided to take the shot and aimed right for the neck and into the vitals.  Luckily I drilled him and he went 20 yards and curled up.  I could hear blood squirting.  It was a joyful sound  :chuckle:

These are really cool Phantom!  Thank you for taking the time to put them together.  As for me, I would probably wait on this shot.  Could be a broadside opportunity or he could possibly come closer with the same angle.  If it were closer I would be inclined to take a frontal like this but not pushing 30 yards.
It is foolish and wrong to mourn these men.  Rather, we should thank god that such men lived.  -General George S. Patton
