Fixing an Alum tanned Coyote
« on: May 20, 2013, 07:49:35 PM »
Last fall I alum tanned a coyote. It did not turn out as I had hoped. My question is this. Can you retan an already alum tanned coyote. I was hopeing to rehydrate then pickle and use Mckenzie tan on it. Any comments on how it might turn out?

I know this was posted a while ago, but yes you can absolutely re-tan an alum tanned hide!!!! The Mc Kenzie tan cream/oil may not give you the results you want (soft, pliable garment tan for rug or wall hanging) I have had excellent results using Para tan a Knobloch product, and EZ 100 a syn tan(Bruce Ritell product) One of the keys to good home tanning is doing a through job breaking/softening/oiling towards the end of process. I use a cup brush(wire brush) chucked in a drill to speed things up (go easy!!!) Then use softening oil & stretch & pull until you can't stretch & pull any more :P Any questions contact me, I can forward or mail info. Oh, don't leave hide in solution for too long, there is another post about hair slippage on coyote ears.       Red Leaf
