question for the shotgun shell reloaders on here
« on: April 20, 2014, 10:43:57 AM »
What is the average cost of reloading a box of shotgun shells now days? I am curious as to whether I should find a bit more powder and primers and start reloading again. I have been getting the shooting bug :yike:. Went from shooting just 4 boxes of clay targets entire last year to double that so far this year.

I do have green dot left, but if anyone knows where I can get or order rex II powder, pm me. It would be greatly appreciated. Powder is the only thing I am short on right now :bash:.

Shot is the wild card.

Ordering in bulk from Graf & Son’s and/or Gamaliel’s I can load a box for about $2.00 plus the cost of shot (that includes the hazmat fees).  Load = 18grains of Promo powder, Noblesport primer, CB 1100 or CB0178 wad.

Hulls are free for the picking up.

Shot prices keep going up but I’ve found it from 5 cent/oz (reclaimed) to 10 cents/oz.  so add another $1.25 to $2.50 for a 1oz trap load.

I believe Rex powder is now extinct.

CP, I think you're off a buck on your figures from Grafs.
8 lb promo @ 103.
5000 primers @ 120.
5000 wads @ 97
+ hazmat/shipping comes out to about 2.93 a box without shot in the shot shells.  If you buy shot in bulk, 40 bags of shot from Connies that brings it up to $5.43 a box (one ounce loads).

The components I've been able to get put me closer to 6.20 a box for 7/8 oz loads.

Probably dated, I haven't placed an order in over a year.  You can get up to 50lbs powder & primer for one hazmat fee.  If I remember right Graf's screws you on shipping for wads - get the wads from Gamaliel's - the rest from Graf's.

Most likely more than buying a case of target loads at your local sporting good store.  I ran an online calculator for reloading shotgun shells recently and there was no break even point, just kept going further negative :(

I believe prices are still moving up.

Cheapo Economy "Bulk Packs" were priced at $28 for a hundred rounds at Walmart = $7.00/box
Like CP said about dated price points....Buy it today and next week everyone will wonder how you can crank it out for that!
I believe $60 cases of Rios/Cheddites will be a memory in the near future and powder @ $26/lb will seem like you got a screaming deal.

I'm loading the tail end of a lot of old shot.  Don't remember what we paid for it but it wasn't a buck a pound.  When figuring prices of reloads, you still have to use replacement costs of $52 a bag (tax or shipping included).  When it's gone, it's gone.

If you can buy in bulk, it'll save you $$.  If you use Fiocchi/Cheddite/Nobel Sport primers you'll save two bits a box.

When I was a young kid, penny candy cost a nickel and a Hershey bar cost a quarter.  Getting used to the new normal.

Does any one here reload brass shells? I've thought about getting the MagTech brass, but they use a Large Pistol Primer, rather than the 209 shotgun primers. Any dissadvantages there?
