Blast with my 58cal Hawken
« on: March 26, 2014, 12:48:28 PM »
Weather was warm today but off and on windy gusts that made shooting a bit of a pain. It seemed every time I would shoulder my Hawken, wooooooooossh, a wind gust would come by, and then stop after I squeezed the trigger. That's okay, have to learn how to shoot in that kind of weather any way.

No rest at any time, this was all Standing - Off Hand shooting from 50 yards. I did a mixture of things which I will label above each target. All loads were the same as far as powder charge, patch thickness and ball size go.

.570" horndy round ball
90gr Goex 2fg
.020" patches

Cool target and really makes you pick a spot and stick to it.

First up was with Mink Oil - No cleaning between shots. My very first shot hit the Aorta!

Mink Oil - Swabbed with TOW

Mr.Flintlock Patch lube, the first shot surprised me because I went to push the ball down and darn near fell over because it loaded so easily LOL.

Now wanting to give Minuteman patch lube another try, I took 2 more shots but really doped that patch up. Super surprised by the accuracy with this lube and the fact I was able to reload easily. Did I judge it to fast before really working with it? Yes, probably and I will follow up on it at a later time. I did find though, when I had the lube on my fingers and held the barrel, It removed the bluing! Dead give away it contains naval jelly and that's the thick oily substance I smell.

 nice shooten   yea  dont really like to use the Minuteman patches for the same reason  i do use the ox york wounderlube   20thou patches during hunting season just to keep the powder dryer rather then the spit patch  seems to work out better for me  any ways  :twocents:

Shooting a .58 caliber in the wind is like throwing a rock in the wind...no difference!   :chuckle:
If it was easy, everybody would be doing it.

When Bernie Madoff did it, it's called a "Ponzi Scheme"
When Government does it, it's called "Social Security"
