Remington 700 ADL Bull barrel...thoughts?
« on: March 12, 2014, 11:12:44 PM »
I'm looking to pick up this rifle as my dedicated yote gun and wondering if anyone has any first hand knowledge with it they'd like to pass on.

My budget is tight, so I can't demand perfection but...  Is the heavy barrel helpful? Like the Rem 700? Any dislikes?  Thanks!

I have a 700 ADL in 7mm mag and it will shoot 1/4 inch groups at 100 yards.  This is without the bull barrel but after floating the barrel and bedding the action and shooting hand loads.  Before floating and bedding accuracy sucked because there was an intentional bump in the stock inside the fore end that was stringing the shots vertically.  We dropped a Timney trigger into my son's CDL and I am thinking of doing the same to mine.

I am curious about what people say about the bull barrel.

If your going to be calling coyotes, a heavy barreled gun can be a beast packing it into stands.  CALLING coyotes isn't a long range game, most shots will be under 300 yrds and a large majority of those under a 100.  That said there are a few guys around that make me look like a midget have no problem packing around a 10+ lb. rifle and handle it like it was a wand.

Heavy barrel guns work best from a fixed shooting situation like targets and varmints(PD's and GS's) hens the name Target/Varmint barreled and the factory predator guns will have light to midweight barrels on them.

Most of my coyote/predator guns are 22" sporter barreled with low to mid powered variable scopes on them on them.  I prefer shooting sticks over a bipod just for the fact the gun is more maneuverable with sticks than an attached bipod.
After the first shot the rest are just noise.

:) I tried a heavy barrel 22-250 for 2 years of calling. Very accurate but not a calling gun, too heavy for me and it is too hard to swing it on a moving target. I use a 7 lb rifle now and have for several years.

I love mine. I like the heavy barrel. I did send it out to Adco Firearms to have my barrel cut to 22".  I like the shorter barrel for swinging it around for close shots.  It is accurate but the heavy barrel is not needed for calling in yotes.  Most called in yote shots average about 60 yards.  It's more of a personal preference.

I started calling years ago with Remington varmint weight rifles and over the years the barrel profiles on the rifles I call with have got lighter and lighter. I keep a heavy barrel in the truck for the accasional long shot but a standard sporter weight or lighter barrel profile handles much better and hikes better. I keep a bipod on my rifles in case I'm in a spot where I can use it. I use shooting sticks the majority of the time.

I think you will get tired of packing a heavy barreled rifle around.  I've been calling for about 12 years and I would guess my average shot at called coyotes is under 100 yards.  The more pressure there is on an area the further you need to walk in away from roads.

Thanks all for your responses!

I ended up going for the much lighter and slightly shorter Ruger American. Looking forward to getting some loads built up for it and take it out!!!  Happy birthday to me ;)

I'm very happy you changed the trigger in your sons gun. Remington triggers have issues! First Hand experience!
