Steelhead Recovery Story
« on: April 05, 2014, 08:15:39 AM »
Anyone else see this story?
http://www.king5.com/news/environment/Threatened-fish-filling-Hood-Canal-River-253469481.html

Interesting that 100 fish could be thought of as filling a river. But this does show what can happen if there is will and $ behind it. Also interesting it's a private group, not WDFW doing this. Anyone know more about the groups involved?

Another interesting article, from 2009. Not sure if it's the same group/program.

Thanks for the links. Interesting story.

If you want something done right and in the most cost effective way, privatize it. If someone's hard earned money is on the line, instead of the taxpayers dime, you can damn well bet it will be done correctly. This includes fish. While it isn't exactly their hard earned money, look at the Indian hatcheries and how productive they are...
I hunt, therefore I am.... I fish, therefore I lie.

These same folks restored the kings on the hamma hamma. Now there working on that river with steelies. The folks who own the hamma hamma seafood company started most of this near 20 yeas ago. Back when if you were in the know you could actually fish the lower river by signing in at the gate and letting them know you were going in.
The good thing is there not telling we're they are doing this. But it's not hard to figure out where if your familiar with these streams. For that small of a river 50 couples is a great start. Still may never open for fishing.

To compare numbers, think about the Solducs Snider creek program. There goals every year was only 25 pairs.

If 50 pairs successfully spawn with a 3% return that's 225 fish when they return. So you can see what 3 to 5 years could do.
