Hunter kills big bear near Seabeck

SEABECK -- A black bear killed by a hunter near Seabeck weighed nearly 600 pounds.

Fish and Wildlife Department Sgt. Ted Jackson says the bear was unusually large for the area.

It was shot Oct. 12 by Dennis Durbin of Seabeck as he was deer hunting with his uncle Dan Durban.

The bear was over 7 feet from nose to tail.

The Kitsap Sun reports the Durbins had 368 pounds of meat processed into sausage and bear jerky.

You guys see the comments on the kitsap sun page?? Wow there is some serious flaming going on about hunting/hunters. One went so far as to say Jesus died so that we wouldn't kill animals anymore.

We need everyone to stay positive and not reply with negative attacks. Those folks are so petty to call legal hunters murderers, but its about Dennis (the hunter) and his great trophy. As far as I know hunting is not even a political platform so its kind of non-issue, not sure why it deserves all the ranting.

I saw that bear on friday when i dropped my mulie off at the taxidermist in port townsend, that thing is huge. He said they dont make a black bear form big enough for the full size mount so he has to hybrid a brown bear mount with it to make it large enough. the paws were as big as my head.

THe article was in the peninsula daily news last week and there has been several very negative editorials since then just blasting hunters killing innocent animals and on and on. Really makes a guy want to blast one back but probably better not to. Its sad to see how far people have gone away from what truely is our heritage and one of the few old traditions we have kept in hunting. nwhunter

You see, I just gotta disagree with this passive attitude towards unfair attacks on our priviledge to hunt.  I say it's time we quit rolling over and taking it, and start standing up for our heritage.  Since when has just being passive ever won anyone to our position.  You should be proud of your harvest, and not have to hide it for fear of offending some bambi-lovin', tree-huggin' moron, that doesn't understand it's our heritage, and that hunters contribute more time and money to the conservation of wildlife than anyone of their self-righteous, hypocritical wannabe organizations ever has.

Stand up for your heritage!!! Be proud of being part of the original conservationist! Be proud of your harvest! You've contributed more to the economy and wildlife conservation with your hunting purchases, than they did buying all their REI crap!  It's time these ignorant hypocrites start putting up, or shutting up.  What have they done for the wildlife?  Buying up land, and keeping people from hunting it does nothing to help the wildlife, and ultimately will end up doing more harm than good to the health of the wildlife.  Part of all firearms and ammunition sales goes towards conservation programs and projects in State Fish and Wildlife Departments.  Hunters help control sizes, and the ultimate health of wildlife herds.

Enough of my rant... but quit rolling over and taking this BS!!!  Stand up for your heritage!
