anybody own a bore scope?
« on: May 04, 2014, 09:00:48 PM »
I'm kicking around the idea of buying a bore scope and I'm wondering if anyone else has picked one up for personal use, and if it was worth it. I don't plan on dropping $800 on a Hawkeye or anything, but used ones from aerospace or other industries can be found at reasonable prices.

The idea just occurred to me today after pulling the barrel on my 300 RUM Striker. I started getting erratic pressure signs and the groups have opened up to nearly double what they used to be. I thought maybe I had a carbon ring but it looks like the barrel may just be toasted. Even after some serious soaking in Kroil and a little JB bore paste the throat looks pretty rough. It looks like pretty severe heat cracking but I can't be sure unless I get in there and really inspect it.

It looks like not even nitriding a 300 RUM can save it for very long. This barrel has about 1500 rounds through it. :chuckle:

Holy smokes. 1500 on a .300 Ultra barrel. That's mighty fine by my book.

I know! I can't be too mad about that! To be fair, only about 800 of them are from me. I picked this Striker up from a retired friend up in Alaska. He has nothing better to do than just shoot and burn up his retirement money. :chuckle:

You know what this means though? It's new barrel time! That's my favorite part about owning a gun! :chuckle:

I have one that I bought to use for work. It is the Snap On one that takes digital pictures. It took awhile to get it using it but now I am pretty good with it. This was a upgrade from my original one that I had for years but finally wore out. It has saved me numerous tear downs on engines and works good to show customers before tear down.
