I need some advice
« on: April 27, 2014, 06:29:35 PM »
Ok guys everything I have learned about turkeys I have done on my own. Now I never have had a mentor or anything so my question is. I go out and get birds to call back and they begin to come in and then stop and then they stop calling is this a normal thing and how many times do you do this before the bird will actually commit?

I have found usually by mistake is if they are answering stop calling when they are within 80 to 100 yards. It's hard so I will slide my call out and hold it with my lips to shut myself up. It's tempting to keep calling which leads to the most common mistake which I believe is over calling.

:yeah: and when they are that close they can then identify where it is coming from. Turkeys have amazing eyesight!
What would life be without the thrill of the hunt?

He is hot w/hens and wants you to go to him. I've watched Toms in full strut w/hens gobble there heads off then shut up. Every 15 min.s or so give a loud cut, if hes still there he will rip a gobble. Not always, each Tom is different. Sometimes when they hear a yelp they gobble all the way back to their strutting area. I was walking a logging road one morning, made a cutting call before I went over a rise in the road, no gobble. Shouldered my gun walked over the rise, big Tom in full strut right in the middle of the road, off he ran. It was first thing in the morning so I knew it was his strutting area. I put him to bed that night, he was up on the ridge above the area I saw him in. The next morning I took my wife to an opening there, we got to watch him strut and gobble all the way to us. The wife shot him at 9yds.
