literally. How do you sharpen your axe or hatchet?

usually a hand file,  just don't use a bench grinder and ruin the temper.

I just use my Bench grinder at home or a flat file at camp. Btw the bench grinder has never had a negative effect on the blade.You should just be removing a small amount of metal not holding it down on the wheel for extend periods of time allowing it to over heat.

I have a hard time not getting a blade to bounce off the grinder, not so much over heat it although that's easy too.

The blade will "chitter" on the stone and it'll gouge it and take out small chunks of metal.

Some grinders don't have them but mine has little rests in front of the wheels  that i use so it doesn't chatter Also if you point the edge of the blade at the ground while applying it to the wheel it's a much more passive angle and reduces the chatter or bounce greatly.

If its really bad I take them to a bench grinder, a variable speed grinder with a few different stones is best, try not to over heat the metal, and finish with a file, long continuous strokes, you can retemper with oil

Hand file, coarse stone, fine stone, and the some wet stones up to 6000 grit. My axes will shave your arm

  and you file/whet towards the butt, not towards the edge. towards the edge will greate a false edge.

With my Worksharp Sharpener, Takes all over 5 minutes and will turn a rusty dull chipped edge blade into something sharp enough to shave paper. Ive done it numerous times.
