Sabot size ?
« on: June 04, 2014, 07:01:44 AM »
I was wondering if anyone ( like sabotloader ) or anyone have / know of a
Listing of petal thickness of 50 cal sabots ? I have a .500 bore remington
That is a great shooter with SST's (.451 and .5010 / .5015 w/sabot ) 250gr . I have looked on mmp site but not Coming up with what I'm looking for
I would like to test the TMZ Boattail and Bloodlines but I have to use a splitting maul to load them  :chuckle:

These two charts might help you somewhat... These are a few years old, so the very newest sabots are probably not on them.

Is your Remington a 700? I had tow different Rem 700's - which by the I believe were probably one of the best ML's of the time.

Both of those rifles I was able to load most of the common loads without to much of a problem using the MMP HPH-24 sabot and/or the MMP HPH .457/.458x50 sabot when shooting 45-70 bullets (.458)

Both MMP and Harvester make a thinner sabot for a .451/.452 bullet.  The MMP is called an EZ load and Harvester offers a 'Crush Rib' sabot.

One thing that might help your loading efforts is do a treatment of 'JB's Bore Paste' to the bore.  Using this approach clean and hones the bore to the point it becomes smooth like glass.

This link will explain it better than I can...

http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/lid=13084/guntechdetail/Using_JB_Bore_Paste_and_Kroil_with_the_VFG_Bore_Pellets

I do have a written explanation of the way I do the project which is different than you see in the link and less expensive.  If you might be interested let me know.

Keep shooting muzzleloaders - They are a blast!!

Yes Yes thank you sabotloader ! That's what I was looking for !
I have hand lapped center fire barrels but not  a muzzleloader
Yes ml700 stainless 24" I set in a Boyd's thumbhole it's a great shooter
Other than tight bore but loads smooth a little tighter at the start (6") but
I believe that's the choking

You might try working that first 6" with JB's - could make a lot of difference.
