It's was good to meet you, completely forgot about the old guy comment, must be my old guy memory!  It's cool to meet huntwa members out in the field, you don't know how many times I ask people when I see them on the trail if their members.

I have met you in person, and yes you are OLD :chuckle:

I don't know where most of you are hunting this unit but I'm definitely putting in for a tag every year from now on for that area.  My buddy took me up there to a spot to look for bears last august then I hunted it for deer during archery season and I saw a minimum of 2-3 bulls every day within easy bow range, aka 30-40 yards. If you need a hint for where to go message me and i'll give you an idea of where I have been scouting. Hopefully I can draw a tag for this some time soon!

That's a good tag.  I suggest try hunting right where the PCT/trail2000 and gmu 346 and the park meet and all the way to where u start getting g close to stampede unit.  Look forward to hearing how it went. To bad u don't have the access permit to the tree farm in gmu 653 if u had that then I would say don't shoot anything under 320 or so.  Your going to have lots of fun.  Let me know if u need a extra guy to tag along and help pack out meat. I'm always amazed with how much bigger a big bull is then spikes and cows when i get up close.  Good luck

With all of the apparently good bull opportunity maybe this unit should be open to general season?  Success would likely decline, but more folks could hunt it, although it would surely be more crowded and more competitive.  Not sure what the state has in store for the next 3 years.

Maybe a few more quality tags would be cool, or better yet a few cow tags.  :dunno:

I have always thought that unit should be OTC, but I think all the west side units should be, except the green river.  Plenty of backcountry and it worked just fine all the years it was OTC.  But I would keep the muzzy tag permit only, just too easy for that weapon, the muzzy hasn't been OTC like the archery and rifle.  It will be interesting to see what the mucks do with the Hancock properties that they bought, if they close us out I think the state should open up the unit.  A small part of me does like it being permit only, I have to admit that.

U can't use a bow for a muzz tag.  The 1st 10 days r the best time to b in there. U will have no prob calling and or locating bull in 653 during that time. U r going to feel like a professional caller and elk hunter.  Its going to b crazy.  During the last 30min of each evening u will hear elk bulging ever 3min or so ...mark my word.  Get on the crest 2000 on the 346 side and drop down I to one of them deep dark holes and it will b crazy.
