Selah Butte
« on: June 13, 2014, 07:56:42 PM »
My 15 year old son drew a big horn tag for Selah Butte. He wants to do it with his bow. Does anyone have any suggestions of were we should start scouting?

Go to the gohunt website. Shows all public land. The unit is so small that it's all probably worth looking at.

Since you live so close, watch the sheep if they pattern a certain area go ask the land owner for permission, they may let a youth hunt it!

Is it the ram or ewe tag? A GPS with land ownership might be a good idea. I know of other people that have drawn that tag had to go on the private land and it's not free. Be prepared to pay a trespass fee. I'd call the wdfw. They are fairly helpful with oil tags and probably have all the contact info.

The Eaton Ranch usually charges between $400 and $600. Not sure if it is different for a youth. It seems to change every year. That being said some nice rams are taken on the public portion every year. I took in a 170 ram last year that was taken off the side of the road on public land. That is a great unit for archery with the broken terrain. You living so close you are aware that it is steep country. Unless he is in fantastic shape and can go for days you may want to pack the rifle for him. Tough hunt for a little guy packing a bow but it's a long season. If he can't close the deal with early with the bow he'll still have plenty of time to get a nice ram with the rifle. Good luck.
You may want to come out to the shop and look at some sheep with known scores so that you know what you are looking at. There are some 2 1/2 yr old rams killed every year because the hunters had no clue what they were looking at.
