They should be very agressive, trying to win over the few cows that will still be coming into their 2nd estrous. I definatly would not be doing any calling and educating in an area I plan on hunting :twocents:

Elk have a eight day memory.  Locke them once a bull beds up his cows get close and bugle him in.

I had that tag last year and some were a bit interested in calling, as open as it is you do a lot more spot and stalking, or you can pattern the spots they like pretty quick and try to be in the right place before sun up.  They were on again off again over that week about the calling, most were location bugle answers, one day there was a big mature 5 point that was feeling his oats all day long, saw him push a few smaller ones around.  Lots of 5 points in there..........You'll see LOTS of bulls, sticking one in a week is tough!  Good Luck!

I am also interested in elk's behavior during the early muzzle season.  I've got an regular muzzle tag.  I think I'll head into the woods with my bugle and see what happens.

I've heard that things should still be hot and heavy for the bulls.  That's why I picked up the blackpowder tag this year.  We had our second child on 7 September, so I was out of pocket for that time period, and I don't want to fight the modern crowd.

I hope it all works out!
