Good opening weekend of crabbing.
« on: July 07, 2014, 11:35:21 AM »
This was the best opening weekend of crabbing that I've had in a while. The crab were plentiful and there was a good number of 7+ inchers. To end our 4 day weekend we had a feast fit for Kings and Queens. I had never done a crab boil with veggies before but it will be a regular occurrence at the Ripper house from now on.

You had the riggers on board. Did you fish?

Anybody get many soft shells?? I had to throw back 12 because they were just not quite hard enough. Press on the shell on underside above the claw and would give, and the back leg where some guys pinch was spongy. Obvious keeper size just slightly soft, so they should be good in August.

Might have to try that crab boil how long on the spuds before the crab?

I fished a little Kola, down by the oil docks off Edmonds. Nothing.  I through back 3 crabs that were keeper sized but soft RB.

For those interested this is how I did the boil. I used about 2 1/2 gallons of sea water, 1 16oz beer, 1/2 cup vinegar and 1/4 cup of Old Bay Seasoning. Put in potato's, 1 large onion quartered, a few garlic cloves and 1 lemon halved. Bring to a boil then reduce heat and simmer for 10 minutes. Add crab, bring back to a boil and simmer for 10 minutes. Add shrimp/prawns if you have them and corn on the cob, cook for 7 more minutes. Remove from heat, drain off liquid and dump out on the table. Open another large, cold beer, grab your crackers and a fork then gorge until you are ready to burst. Take a nap then repeat.  :chuckle:
